Every day, the Polk County Chapter of the American Red Cross helps people in emergencies, whether it's hundreds of disaster victims or one sick child who needs blood. These vital services are made possible by people just like you, who learn how good it can feel to lend a helping hand. Red Cross "everyday heroes" are people who care about people. They comes from all walks of life; men and women, young and old, regardless of race, creed or color. Volunteers are the heart and soul of the American Red Cross. Volunteers serve at all levels of the organization, from disaster relief, providing health and safety instruction to coordinating casework, performing clerical tasks, and greeting people at the front desk. Everyone has something special to offer, and help is greatly needed and appreciated. So why not volunteer today?

Ways to Volunteer

Donate Blood
One of the best ways to help the Red Cross is to Donate a pint of blood. The process is quick, usually lasting less than an hour. Many people do it on their lunch break. It is also relatively painless, as the medical staff is well trained. One donation can save three lives, have you saved a life recently? Blood Drive Assistant
Even if you are unable to donate blood, you can still help out during the blood drives by donating your time. Greeters are needed to check appointments, gets donors to read all required materials, has them sign in, and shows them to the donor room. Also needed are Canteen Assistant who offer donors something to eat, watches for signs of dizziness, provides nurses with materials if needed, and thanks the donors for donating.

Disaster Action Team (DAT) Member
In times of emergences, many people turn to theRed Cross for help. Weather it be floods, severe storms or fire. Red Cross Disaster Action Teams jump to action to aid victims. DAT members, assist Red Cross in providing relief to victims of disaster and helps prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. Also, they provide timely response to disasters and assistance to victims, responds to disaster teams, and provides Red Cross services.

Health & Safety Volunteers
Assist the Polk County Chapter of the Red Cross by being a part of the administrative side of it. Answer phone calls, or attend health fairs and events to promote Red Cross programs. Instruct the public in Health & Safety classes such as first aid, CPR, water safety, HIV/AIDS education, and others.
